Nikola Arkane

Due to a leaking roof at our usual meeting place, The Hassocks, Gordon yet again saved the day by hosting the lecture at his place. Big thanks to Gordon for arranging this at short notice.

Kevin Morton started the evening with a minute silence to pay our respects the Her Majesty. He then introduced Nikola Arkane, but not before the most important part of the evening, the tea and coffee count. Once that critical number had been decided by all, Nikola began her performance starting with a handkerchief draped over a small wooden box. She then vanished a card saying "Do not open" using black art and a thumb tip, Nikola showed us inside and revealed a green gem as she used her theatrical skills to draw our attention to her removing the gem. She calls this trick "A girl's best friend. She then amazingly vanished the gem using a Tommy Wonder weighted pull system set up inside her jacket. As she didn't remove the gem in the first place, she made the gem appear back in the box.

The wooden box was then placed under the silk (Arkane A-Go-Go) which is a design variant of a "Go Go Vanisher" by Stewart James, she transformed the wooden box into a card box.

Nikola then went on to perform the 1st effect she learnt which is a variant of an Elmsley count, She used the principle of the girl in the box from how she started magic as a magician's assistant. It's a packet trick and uses 4 cards, 3 cards with the word mirror, 1 card with a girl on one side and an actual mirror on the other side.

This card packet effect is based on The Four Card Trick from The Collected Works of Alex Emsley Volume 1. published by L and L and Stephen Minch.

The packet trick was first adapted and made by Nikola in 2014 with some blank playing cards and a Sharpie marker. After revisiting it last year, it's finally been transformed into a professional-looking card trick which you can now purchase and perform.

Nikola then performed her version of cards across which was a colour change routine, using red-backed cards and blue-backed cards and a little help from some 2-way glue.

She calls this effect "The Doppler shift", the 2-way glue helps 10 red cards become 7 cards and 10 blue cards become 13 cards with 3 of them being red, Nikola uses the same coloured silks in her performance.

Check out Nikola's website to purchase some of these effects.
